Walking the Wild Coast (Mpondoland)

The Mpondo people are exemplary in their struggle to preserve their land, culture and resources from external interests. This seven day hike, guided and hosted by the custodians of the land, is not only one of the most beautiful hikes that you can do, but is also an act of solidarity that supports this struggle that is an example for communities the world over. Every day is a feast for all the senses and ends with a host family who go beyond the norms of hospitality to ensure that you are well looked after. All meals are provided and your luggage gets transported from hut to hut for you.

Accommodation

You will get to experience the true hospitality and warmth of the Mpondo people who welcome us into their homes and feed us on every level. We will be sleeping in huts on mattresses on the floor, together with other hikers, washing in basins and using long drop toilets. This opportunity to be welcomed into a community and experience village life is indeed one of the highlights of the experience.

Fitness Level

We will be walking roughly 15km per day, so you need to be relatively fit.

Terrain is gentle, with a mix of beach, grassy paths, and some rocky sections.

Attire / Gear

Comfortable clothing and worn in hiking shoes are a necessity. Bear in mind the summer sun can be rather harsh, so long sleeve shirts and pants are recommended. Swimming gear, sun hats, sunscreen and sunglasses. Also be prepared for possible rain, especially in summer. You will need a daypack to carry your lunch and water-bottle whilst hiking; and a bigger bag with your clothing which gets transferred to your hut each night. Full gear list supplied on booking.
